Our History

Over the past 7 years, NHS of Queens has firmly established roots as an independent 501 (c)3, building on years of service as part of a larger umbrella organization. Increased client participation and outcomes and engagement by clients and community members in activities such as the Housing Expo and the annual Spruce-Up event demonstrated the value of NHS of Queens’ services and the trust between the organization and the community.

Additional evidence of the organization’s credibility includes tripling the number of government contracts; expanding contracts with organizations such as CNYCN; continued financial support and recognition from elected officials; continued financial support from local banks and others; securing HUD certification.

1994

Thanks to our partner, Astoria Federal Bank, in-kind contribution, NHS of Northern Queens opened in Woodside, Queens, and began to empower Northwestern Queens.

2016

Through new leadership from staff and the board, NHS of Northern Queens became Neighborhood Housing Services of Queens CDC, Inc and its own organization.

2019

Celebrated 25 years of serving the Northwestern Queens neighborhoods and the beginning of a new wave of programmatic additions such as workforce development.

2020

The communities we serve are hard-hit, and we must act quickly to adapt to the new world that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused. In addition to our existing portfolio of services, our Adopt a Family initiative is born. It begins to deliver to hundreds of families who have lost their jobs with grocery supplies.

2022

In its 28th year, NHS of Queens has had one of its strongest years financially, programmatically, and capacity-wise. NHS of Queens secured over $2.65 million in government funding for its new casita and the largest contract in its history through its multi-year million work with NYSERDA.
